A very important message for all members at CSSEA member agencies!
You have the right to union representation
– do not waive your rights!
We have been informed that some employers are:
- cherry-picking shop stewards to attend meetings with members; and
- asking members to sign a waiver form to give up their right to have a shop steward present.
The Union is strongly recommending that all members know and exercise their rights!
You have the right to choose the shop steward that you are most comfortable with. Never let the employer choose a shop steward for you. If you cannot find a shop steward in a timely manner, contact your union area office immediately. Finding a shop steward should not result in a significant delay to meetings.
You have the right to have a shop steward present at all meetings with an employer representative that you believe may lead to possible disciplinary action - even if the employer says that the meeting does not concern discipline.
You should not – and do not have to - sign any waiver form presented to you by the employer that forces you to give up your rights to shop steward representation!
Shop stewards are trained to represent your interests and protect your rights. They must maintain confidentiality.
Contact the union immediately if:
- you have been asked to attend a meeting without a shop steward present,
- you have been asked to sign a waiver
- you employer has picked the steward
- you don’t know who your steward is, or there is no steward in your worksite.
