BCGEU contributes to Haitian relief on behalf of members
Like many of you, I was shocked by the television images of devastation and grief that followed the earthquake in Haiti - levelling many towns and cities and claiming hundreds of thousands of lives.
The entire world is mobilizing to provide food, shelter and medical aid for the Haitian people. As part of this global effort, the BCGEU's Provincial Executive passed a motion approving a $30,000 donation to the disaster relief effort in Haiti, on behalf of our membership.
The money will go to three reputable organizations:
- $10,000 will be sent through our national organization NUPGE to Doctors without Borders
- $20,000 will be split equally between the Canadian Red Cross and the Humanitarian Coalition (Oxfam Canada, Oxfam Quebec, Save the Children, and CARE Canada).
All of these organizations are currently on the ground in Haiti. By splitting our funds in this way, we will be helping deliver aid to the largest number of people as quickly as possible.
Our hopes and wishes go out to the people of Haiti and those Canadians who have lost friends and relatives in the earthquake.
