April 27 is Administrative Services Recognition Day 2011

We salute Component 12 members for the ninth consecutive year!

April 27 is the day we celebrate and acknowledge the important role of administrative services across B.C. Better than anyone else, BCGEU Component 12 members know the value administrative service workers provide to British Columbia communities.

Administrative Services Recognition Day is a tribute to the professional roles and responsibilities Component 12 members fulfill every day.

Another aim of the day is to celebrate the diversity of the work administrative services staff members perform. BCGEU Component 12 members work for a variety of employers in addition to the government. Some work for private employers with government contracts, such as HP, Maximus and TSSI. Others work for public sector authorities, such as Land Titles and Survey Authority, Business Practices and Consumer Services Authority and Emergency Health Services.

Finally, Administrative Services Recognition Day is also about workers showing solidarity with each other. Solidarity as we work through the effects on our daily work lives that the continual restructuring and job cuts in the public service have on all of us, no matter who employs us.

Our special day was first recognized in the 13th Administrative Services Component Agreement (Article 1.2) in 2002.

New for 2011 – Component 12 overtime calculator

In time for Administrative Services Recognition Day 2011, we’re introducing the RealPayDay Calculator.

Tell us what you earn, your scheduled work hours and your actual hours of work each week. The calculator will tell you what day of the year you really start getting paid after all your unpaid overtime is taken into account. You might be surprised. Unpaid overtime accumulates like compound interest, but for the employers’ benefit.

The calculator will launch on April 27 at www.realpayday.ca.

Celebrate Administrative Services Day at your workplace!

Each Component 12 local is planning activities to mark the day, engage members and have fun. You can help as well. Have a potluck lunch, order a special cake or other treats for coffee break. Ask everyone to wear purple - our unofficial colour.

Check with your local chair to see what’s being planned in your area. You must be pre-authorized for any reimbursements. Contact your local executive to seek pre-authorization.

Share the recognition!

Take pictures of your event and send them to communications@bcgeu.ca. Be sure to tell us in which workplace the photo was taken and the names of the people in the picture. We will publish as many as we can on our webpage’s photo gallery.

In solidarity and on behalf of the Component 12 executive,
