Child Care Is a Right project
4 Mar '11
The Coalition of Child Care Advocates of BC (CCCABC) has announced its new project, “Child Care is a Right.” The project is in partnership with the Child Care Advocacy Association of Canada (CCAAC).
The project aims to explore Canada’s international treaty obligations to women, children and families as they pertain to child care. The initial focus will be to engage in the UN review process of Canada’s obligations under the Convention of the Rights of the Child (CRC) – scheduled for 2011 - and related General Comment #7, the Convention to Eliminate Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) and the Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.
Among the goals of the project:
- conduct legal research to identify the implications of B.C.’s obligations under international treaties to protect children and women's rights for child care;
- undertake public education about a rights based approach to women's and children's rights based on the research; and
- advance concrete options for legal and other reforms that support B.C.'s compliance with its international obligations.
