Valuing our members - Social Work Week - March 9-13, 2009
A message from President Darryl Walker
BCGEU members who provide social services work hard everyday to support children and families in need. It's work that requires heart, integrity, and strong professional commitment. It's demanding work that poses many challenges. And it's vital work that keeps our communities healthy.
On the occasion of Social Work Week this March 9-13, I ask fellow BCGEU members to join me in commending our more than 7,000 BCGEU members who provide these important social services.
It's also important that the BC government recognizes that more than praise is needed in these times. Our members are working under the stress of increasing workloads, and the legacy of cuts to services. Numerous recent third party reports have called on the government to increase funding and improve coordination of services for vulnerable people, and to consult with the BCGEU to address recruitment and retention issues. We look forward to the government following through on these recommendations.
Whether it's providing counselling services, arranging for the well-being of a child in care, or helping a client apply for income assistance, BCGEU members who are social workers and support staff make a positive difference in the lives of British Columbians. These members contribute to making our union stronger, as well.
