Celebrating women's achievements
Every year is marked on March 8th, International Women’s Day, to celebrate and assess our gains and the progress yet to be achieved for women. Similarly in October, for Women’s History Month, the union acknowledges Person’s Day and landmark victories such as the Supreme Court of Canada decision regarding BCGEU member, Tawney Meiorin. The case established new principles for unions to use in fighting discrimination in workplace standards and addressing duty to accommodate issues.
Women’s photo contests have been held annually to encourage picture taking and the chronicling of members at work and in the community. The contests have expanded the union’s herstory archival records and the overall appreciation of the diversity within the BCGEU.
For "Take Back the Night" and on December 6th, Commemoration and Action Day to End Violence Against Women and Children, we stop to mourn and then renew our commitment for social and political change.
