Terms of Reference

  • generally responsible for overseeing the administration of the scholarship program which annually awards $45, 000 in scholarships to successful applicants with $3,000 for full-time students and $2,000 for part-time students;
  • responsible for promoting the union's scholarship program among union members and their families; responsible for establishing the eligibility criteria for scholarship applicants;
  • responsible for choosing the scholarship winners each year from among those applying;
  • responsible for notifying the successful applicants and arranging for presentation of scholarships by the senior elected union officer in the area;
  • responsible for setting out the subjects for the essays on a yearly basis.
     

Scholarship Criteria

The BC Government and Service Employees’ Union is offering $45,000 in scholarship awards, $3,000.00 for full-time students and $2,000.00 for part-time students who are BCGEU members or relatives of BCGEU members or staff.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

  1. Members of the BCGEU in good standing are eligible to apply.
  2. Relatives of BCGEU members or staff in good standing or relatives of deceased or retired members are eligible to apply.  Definition of a relative: a spouse of same or opposite sex, parent, child, including a step-child or foster child, brother, sister or grandchild.
  3. Applicants must be living in Canada.
  4. Applicants must be registering in either full-time or part-time post-secondary programs at a Canadian educational institution that is listed with HRSDC Canada (www.hrsdc.gc.ca, click “CanLearn.ca”).  Winners will not be awarded money until proof of post secondary registration is received.
  5. For students with special needs who have an IEP (Individual Education Plan) you have the choice of submitting your essay as per the criteria or alternatively, you can submit in DVD format, video (i.e. acting/skit) or audio (reading).  It must be at least 15 minutes in length.
  6. Previous BCGEU scholarship winners and Members of unions affiliated to the BCGEU are not eligible.

 DETAILED CRITERIA:

  1. Applicants must have a letter-grade standing of C or better.  Copies of the grade standing must be included with the scholarship application.  Mature students and students with an IEP will have this requirement waived.
  2. A double-spaced, typed essay of 1,250 (minimum) to 1,750 (maximum) words from one of the following topics shall be the basis for awarding the scholarship.  No hand-written essays will be accepted.
  3. The deadline for receipt of applications is the last business day in February.
  4. In combination with your research, the committee will be looking for creativity such as personal experiences, discussions and/or interviews with others.
  5. A Bibliography/list of resources and personal interviews, written and web based, must be included.
  6. Scholarship recipients may be required to have their photos appear in the “Provincial” magazine and/or in the local newspapers in their area.
  7. All essays (both HARD COPY & DISK COPY) are to be sent with a with a completed Application Form and Cover sheet to: **We do not accept Faxed applications.
