BCGEU members to strike LifeLabs after mediation fails

Job action at Lifelabs’ Patient Service Centres will begin province-wide on Monday, January 21, 2013 on a rotating basis.

The BCGEU served 72 hours strike notice late last week and will be in a legal strike position as of 6:00 a.m. Information about affected worksites and the duration of job action can be found below.

The union doesn’t take the decision to strike lightly. The move comes following the failure of day long mediated talks at the Labour Relations Board on Saturday, January 19. The main issues are wages and the employer’s demand that our members accept concessions.

BCGEU members at LifeLabs play a key role in the health care delivery system in B.C. and deserve a fair and reasonable agreement. Last week, LifeLabs announced its intention to purchase BC Biomedical Laboratories, at a cost expected to be in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

If you're a float employee and were scheduled to work at a Patient Service Centre and the employer has now contacted you to cancel your shift because of picketing, please report to the PSC for picket duty.

We urge other BCGEU members to visit any one of the struck worksites to show solidarity with sisters and brothers on the picket line.
