Are you interested in health and safety issues at your workplace?

Your health and safety and that of your fellow workers is critically important.

Workers must feel safe at work and be able to go home at the end of their day or shift without concern for their safety. In 2006 there were over 2.7 million days of work lost in B.C. due to injury-far too many. We have to change that.

The key to making sure employers listen to the concerns of workers is for union members to participate in workplace activities that help ensure safety is paramount.

BCGEU members around the province at all their worksites are encouraged to put their names forward if they would like to participate in their local health and safety committees. The union is renewing our membership on the committees and wants you to get involved.

Over the next few weeks your workplace will be canvassed by your local executive or bargaining committee member to see which members are interested in participating in the health and safety committee at your workplace.

Don't wait for someone to contact you. If you are interested, reach out to your local chair or your bargaining committee members.

If you aren't sure who to contact, call your Area Office or e-mail: communications@bcgeu.ca.

There's a new appointment process which will renew our membership on some committees and get health and safety committees established where they don't exist now.

An orientation kit for committee members will be forwarded to those appointed. The union has developed an excellent training program which will be scheduled for all committee members. As well, B.C. law says that the employer must pay for each member of a health and safety committee to take an eight-hour training session per year.

This is an exciting and timely opportunity for all members who are interested in health and safety issues at their worksite.
