B.C. events mark 350 International Day of Climate Action Oct. 24

On Oct. 24 people from all over the world are taking a stand in their own way to call for urgent action on the climate change crisis. A number of events are being staged in B.C. communities, and BCGEU is sponsoring a gardening workshop in Victoria.

Banding loosely around a call to reduce carbon in the atmosphere down to a safe and sustainable level of 350 parts per million, thousands of locally-planned events in well-over a hundred countries are set for this Saturday.

Vancouver event
In Vancouver, head to the Cambie Street Bridge at 11:00 am for the Bridge to a Cool Planet event. It starts with a parade to Science World, and activities run throughout the day, including an eco-fair, kid's activities, music, and guest speakers. It will be a fun and spectacular event to put public pressure on the Canadian government to take a leadership role in climate change action, including at the Copenhagen UN Climate Conference in December. Victoria event
In Victoria, head to Centennial Square at noon for music, dancing, and kid's activities. A mass bicycle ride will start at 3:50 p.m. In the evening, there will be a film and panel discussion at the University of Victoria. Click here for more info.

BCGEU gardening workshop
BCGEU's Cool Communities Campaign is hosting another great environmentally-friendly activity this Sat. Oct. 24 in Victoria: a free gardening workshop for members, friends, and family. Come to BCGEU building at 2994 Douglas Street from 9:30-11:30 am to hear about what to do in your garden now and through the winter, including options for protecting your soil from our heavy winter rains.

The workshop will be led by a master gardener. For more info on this event, or how to organize your own local event with the support of your union, contact chris.kinkaid@bcgeu.ca about BCGEU's Cool Communities campaign.
