I agree with the comments made.
We as CHW's have had a huge increase in delegation of tasks and client's acuity have
risen dramatically. Bulling is a great concern for members in our area. This has not been addressed.
What about this comment it made sense?
The union's proposal for a wage increase is based on rising costs for members because of factors like the HST and carbon tax, and the fact that Victoria has already given a three per cent pay boosts to groups like registered nurses and doctors. "Bargaining can only work when there's one set of rules for everyone," Walker says.
BCGEU members stand up for their communities
I continue to be amazed by our members and how dedicated they are to the services they provide, in the face of real challenges.
The Northern Health Authority (NHA) announced it would be closing two important services for some of the most vulnerable people in our province: Step Up House, a mental health group home in Quesnel and ATLAS Youth Drug and Alcohol Treatment centre in Terrace.
Both are homes to people who need around-the-clock support to keep well and stable. Both homes are slated to be closed shortly after the holiday season.
On Monday, front-line workers travelled on winter roads to make a presentation to the NHA Board in Prince George. These members aren't paid lobbyists or professional campaigners. They are community workers who administer medication, prepare meals, organize programs, and teach life skills. They try to create joy and happiness for people who are struggling.
They are people who care for the needs of those who live with mental illness and addictions. They walk with people during some of their darkest moments and provide them with hope for a better life.
These members told the Board that closing these homes is a mistake. That their clients are afraid about what might happen to them if they are taken out of their homes. And that the people who live in these homes are more than numbers - they are people.
I am so proud of our members who are standing up for vital services in their communities. Their personal dedication is honourable. As one community supporter told the NHA Board, "Front-line people should be treasured. The ones who lost their positions - their first thoughts were for the clients."
I hope the NHA Board and this government are listening.
Tentative Agreement in Community Health
NHA Board Meeting
Thanks, Daryl for your words. The reality is that several of the people currently living at the Group Home in Quesnel might still end up being offered placement in Fort St. John. With my apologies to the folks up there, this would seem like the end of the world for our residents here who have lived all of their lives here in Quesnel.. and who are ill equipped mentally to face this kind of disruption of their lives. I hope there are some lobbying strategies we can yet try to prevent this. To Dec. 14 we had collected 656 signatures. Since then I have received perhaps a 100 more. At least these signatories have some sense!

Tentative Agreement in Community Health
I'd just like some clarification on this. Does this tentative agreement apply to all members in the Community Health Subsector Agreement?? If so, I'm concerned about the lack of a wage increase. I am at the top of an already too low pay grid, which means no more increments or pay increases at all unless it is included in a collective agreement. Also, I don't see a huge benefit to having a BlueNet card. We currently submit pharmacare receipts and are reimbursed within two weeks, so there is no huge advantage there. As for job security....you might toughen up the language regarding contracting out, but no one can ensure job security, as is clearly evident with the present cutbacks, etc. As for increasing wages for LPN's, let's be clear that we are ALL working harder for less and no one group should be singled out to receive an increase. Please be clearer as to exactly which component this tentative agreement applies to, so our members know who is included. And let's all remember: whatever effects one of us, effects all of us!
