BCGEU supports Occupy Vancouver

The B.C. Government and Services’ Employees’ Union (BCGEU) will be participating in Occupy Vancouver protests, starting on Saturday.

The BCGEU stands in solidarity with the Occupy Wall Street movement’s call for good jobs, fair taxes and strong public services. The union is encouraging its members join the Occupy Vancouver event on Saturday, October 15 at noon at the Vancouver Art Gallery in downtown Vancouver.

In a statement released Wednesday, BC Federation of Labour President Jim Sinclair said, “The Occupy Wall Street movement expresses an underlying desire for fairness, equality and opportunity in the economy and our society. The BC Federation of Labour stands in solidarity with that desire, as part of the 99 percent, and calls on the governments of British Columbia and Canada to act swiftly and decisively to narrow the gap.”

The mass protest movement that began on Wall Street nearly a month ago is spreading across Canada. On Saturday, protesters are expected in several Canadian cities including Montreal, Toronto and Edmonton.

Occupy Vancouver has been explicit in its commitment to non-violent protest and creating a safe space for everyone’s voices to be heard. BCGEU members are encouraged to attend, and to bring their families.
