Youth and Family counselling program in Victoria closes after 25 years
The B.C. Government and Services Employees’ Union (BCGEU) is disappointed to report that the Greater Victoria Child and Family Counselling Association (CAFCA) closed down on November 30, after 25 years in operation. Despite the closure, a number of successful programs and services were transferred to other agencies, minimizing job loss.
“Over the years, CAFCA provided invaluable family support and youth counselling services in the greater Victoria area which directly supported vulnerable youth and families in the community,” said BCGEU President Darryl Walker. “We are very disappointed that funding cutbacks from the Ministry of Children and Families led to the closure of this facility, which also provided unique services to youth with autism.”
CAFCA had long-standing Child Protection and Youth Services contracts with the Ministry for Children and Family Development that were terminated on November 30, 2011, leading to the closure of the non-profit agency on that date. There were 22 BCGEU members working at CAFCA. The transfer of the Family Development program to Phoenix Human Services Association saved a number of youth counsellor jobs. A modified version of CAFCA’s Autism Services Program found a new home at Community Living Victoria, providing the option of service continuity for clients and work for CAFCA staff as well.
“I want to acknowledge the front-line staff of CAFCA past and present. I am incredibly thankful that there are people like you who respond to those in need. Our community and society is so much richer for your efforts. Thank you for 25 years of bringing good things to life one child and one family at a time,” wrote CAFCA Board President Andrew Morgan in the final CAFCA newsletter to its members.
