BCIT (Instructors) bargaining update
As we reported in our last set of member meetings, we engaged a mediator under Section 74 of the BC Labour Relations Code. Our intention was to conclude a small package of proposals to close off our collective agreement for the 2010/11 period. With the assistance of the mediator, we worked hard to meet the concerns of the Employer. On November 25th, the mediator concluded that the parties were not able to reach an agreement. At this time, the mediator remains engaged should either party propose further talks.
There is, however, some activity on the provincial front for the common table talks. The Post Secondary Employers Association and the unions within BC will be returning to the table on December 12th to attempt to finalize the 2010/11 provincial contract. If the parties are able to settle the provincial contract, we may take that information forward for another attempt to settle our collective agreement with BCIT before others in our sector start bargaining for their 2012/13 contract.
We will have more news in the New Year, but until then we hope all our members can enjoy the holidays with their families, and wish everyone a happy and safe holiday season.
