BCIT (Instructors) bargaining update
As we reported at our last membership meeting, your committee decided to move bargaining to mediation to try another avenue to reach a collective agreement for 2010/11. To date that mediation has been as arduous as the previous 20 months of bargaining with BCIT. At this time talks have broken down and we are currently assessing the situation.
However, there is some good news in common table post-secondary bargaining. Nearly two years after the expiry of their collective agreement, post-secondary instructors have reached a tentative settlement that concludes the 2010 round of provincial common table negotiations. While the settlement meets the net-zero mandate, the settlement will not resolve the continuing recruitment and retention issues in post-secondary.
Your bargaining committee will be reviewing the provincial settlement to see if the changes there will provide a catalyst to spur bargaining with our own employer.
