ELECTION OF LOCAL 1005 EXECUTIVE FOR 2012-2015 TERM OF OFFICE

Nominations are now open for the following positions on the Local 1005 Executive for the three-year term of office ending Spring 2015.  A general description of the duties and responsibilities of these positions is on the reverse.

  • Chairperson
  • 1st Vice-chairperson
  • 2nd Vice-chairperson
  • Treasurer
  • Recording Secretary
  • Members-at-Large

All members of BCGEU Local 1005 are encouraged to become active in our Union and are eligible to be nominated for these positions.  Members from equity seeking groups (workers of colour, workers with disabilities, Aboriginal workers, gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender workers) as well as young workers (age 29 or less) are particularly encouraged to consider putting their names forward.

Fully-completed Nomination Forms will be accepted at the Kamloops BCGEU Office by hand delivery, fax or email until 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 31, 2012.  Nomination Forms may be obtained from your Steward or from the Kamloops BCGEU Office at the address noted below.

If more than one nomination is received for each position, a mail ballot will be conducted for the contested position(s) – otherwise the nominees for uncontested positions will be considered acclaimed effective January 31, 2012.  Voting for contested positions will be conducted in the following manner:

  1. There must be a minimum of 30 days between the close of nominations and the date of election (date the ballots are counted).
  2. Within seven days of the close of nominations, candidates have the right to request and receive a list of Local 1005 Stewards from the BCGEU.  They may also submit a maximum 250-word "bio/election campaign" statement about themselves which the Area Office will type and attach to a "Notice of Vote" bulletin that will provide the names of the candidates and time frame for voting.
  3. Voting packages will be mailed to Stewards approximately two weeks after the close of nominations.  Members in worksites without a Steward or Contact may request a balloting package from the Kamloops BCGEU Office.

If you have any questions, please contact Local 1005 Chairperson Fred Street or the Kamloops BCGEU Office.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE LOCAL EXECUTIVE

Local Officers have a flexible range of duties and responsibilities.  All Local Officers are expected to attend Executive meetings and general membership meetings.  Officers also maintain a communications network with Local activists, coordinate member-to-member outreach, provide support to Local activists and act as a resource to the staff servicing the Local.  The positions involve a mix of volunteer time commitment and Union-paid leaves of absence for specific purposes.

Chairperson:  Chairs general membership, Local Executive, and other meetings; represents the Local on the area Cross-Component Committee (or delegates this to another activist); represents the Local on the Component Executive.

First Vice-Chairperson:  Chairs general membership, Local Executive and other meetings in the absence or at the request of the Chairperson; chairs committees as assigned by the Local Executive.

Second Vice-Chairperson:  Chairs general membership, Local Executive and other meetings in the absence or at the request of the Chairperson or First Vice-Chairperson; chairs committees as assigned by the Local Executive.

Treasurer:  Authorizes Local expenditures; maintains accounting of Local expenses; liaises with Component Treasurer; makes financial report to Local Executive and general membership meetings.

Recording Secretary:  Records minutes of general membership and Local Executive meetings; receives and records Local correspondence; arranges meetings and issues meeting notices and agendas.

Member-at-Large: Assists the Local Chairperson and table officers with duties; may chair committees as assigned by the Local Executive.  The Local may designate that one Member-at-Large position be filled by a Young Worker (age 29 or less).  Young Worker Representative:  Represents the interests of young workers on the Local Executive; liaises with young workers who are members of the Local; assists the Local Chairperson and table officers with duties; may chair committees as assigned by the Local Executive.

Locals may have additional representatives on the Component Executive depending on the number of members in the Local, or may occasionally send an observer to Component Executive meetings.

The BCGEU offers an excellent program of labour education that all activists are welcome to access.  Additional opportunities are often provided to Local Officers to support their activism and development.
