Statement from the president on the passing of Jack Layton
It was with profound sadness that I learned this morning of the sudden passing of NDP Opposition Leader Jack Layton. Like many Canadians, I believed that Jack’s boundless enthusiasm and determination would help propel him past his latest battle with cancer, and continue to build a progressive alternative government for Canadians.
Jack’s legacy will remain an inspiration for all aspiring public representatives. His constant focus on making government work for all Canadians, not merely those with wealth and privilege, played a key role in growing support for the NDP as a clear, principled alternative to the establishment parties across the country.
Jack’s support for quality public services and workers’ rights, equality for women and minorities, early childhood education programs, and principled opposition to the use of military aggression to force peace reflect values shared by many Canadians.
On behalf of the BCGEU’s 65,000 members, allow me to express our deepest condolences to Jack’s family, friends and colleagues on this very sad day for Canada.
Ralph Waldo Emerson once wrote: “Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” These words could have been written for Jack Layton, whose vision, dedication and commitment to improve the lives of Canadians blazed a broad path for us all to follow.
Rest in Peace, Jack.
