Governments are giving away billions in corporate tax cuts while thousands of people with mental illness and addictions are unable to get the help they need. We have a growing mental health crisis in our country. Here in British Columbia:
- 1 in 5 adults and 1 in 7 children will experience mental illness in their lifetime… and 2 out of 3 will not seek help;
- an estimated 130,000 people will suffer a mental disorder so severe and persistent that they are not able to function "normally";
- over 500 people will commit suicide this year – and a disproportionate number will be Aboriginal and/or youth;
- Existing mental health services are stretched to the limit as organizations struggle with high demand and cuts to their funding.
Meanwhile, governments across the country are giving away billions in corporate tax cuts. This is money that could be used for expanding mental health services, community treatment programs, supportive housing, early intervention programs in schools, and more public education campaigns to combat stigma. Corporate tax cuts result in program cuts and bed closures in the mental health system. This is inhumane. It goes against the fundamental Canadian values of compassion and equality. And it's not the kind of society we want for ourselves or our children.
