BCGEU Public Service bargaining 2025 backgrounder 

  • The BC General Employees’ Union (BCGEU) is B.C.'s most dynamic, diverse, and fastest growing union -- representing more than 90,000 members working in every sector of the economy and living in every community across the province.
  • Bargaining will soon be underway between the BC General Employees’ Union and B.C.’s Public Service Agency (PSA) for the 20th Main Agreement. 
  • The two parties will first meet to exchange proposals on Wednesday, January 22nd in Victoria
  • The previous public service agreement – the 19th Main Agreement – took effect April 1, 2022, and expires on March 31, 2025.
  • The BCGEU is the only union covered by this agreement.Employer: B.C. Public Service Agency
  • The BCGEU is the first union that represents B.C.’s public sector workers to begin bargaining with the PSA.
  • BCGEU members covered: over 34,000 (one of the largest bargaining units within B.C.’s public service)
  • Examples of jobs performed, and services provided by BCGEU members:
    • Social workers, child protection, probation officers, and system analysts;  
    • Wildfire fighters, biologists, design engineers, conservation officers, scientific/technical officers, inspectors and planning officers.  
    • Correctional officers and sheriffs;
    • Liquor and cannabis retail and distribution staff;and
    • Court workers and other administrative professionals.
  • An additional 38,000 BCGEU members will also bargain with the provincial government in 2025, covered by five additional public sector agreements, those are:
    • The Community Bargaining Association (Community Health) agreement is a multi-union agreement covering more than 12,500 BCGEU members. Proposals will be exchanged on February 11, 2025 and bargaining begins in March with two dates set: March 4-6 and March 11-13. BCGEU is the lead union of Community Health.
    • The Community Social Services agreement covers more than 15,000 BCGEU members. BCGEU is also the lead union for Community Social Services, and a date for negotiations has not yet been determined.
    • The Health Facilities and Health Science Professionals agreements covers approximately 5,700 BCGEU members, and a date for negotiations has not yet been determined.
    • Agreements in the post-secondary sector cover a total of approximately 4,000 BCGEU members. Negotiations for instructors and negotiations for support staff have not yet been determined.
