BC Housing (Admin) Nominations for Union shop steward

To:     All BCGEU Members at BC Housing (Admin) – BCGEU Local 1703
Re:     Nominations for Union shop steward

The BCGEU is looking for a union steward for the BC Housing Commission (Admin) in the Lower Mainland area.

Nominations for the position are now open. Steward nomination forms must be received by the Union by no later than Friday, November 18, 2016.

What do stewards do?

Union stewards are the eyes and ears of the Union. Their role is to enforce the collective agreement and protect workers’ rights.

Stewards provide support and advice to members who think they are being treated unfairly by the Employer. They help solve problems in the workplace, they represent members facing discipline or dealing with other workplace problems.

Stewards sign up new employees with the Union, and provide information on BCGEU services. They conduct ratification votes and elections.

What skills do I need to be a steward?

Stewards are workplace leaders. They are usually good listeners, problem solvers and team players. They have good communication skills, and want to help others.

Stewards have clear rights under the collective agreement. Stewards are mentored by BCGEU staff representatives, who are available to answer questions and support stewards in the workplace.

BCGEU Stewards are eligible for paid union leave from work to take steward training, and may take shorter courses in such topics as human rights, facing management, and communication

If you are interested in becoming a steward, please have a co-worker fill out the attached nomination form to nominate you as a steward.

If several nominations are received, an election may be held.

The nomination form must be faxed to 604-215-1410 or emailed the BCGEU Lower Mainland Area Office at [email protected] by no later than Friday, November 18, 2016 at 5pm.

Thank you for your interest.

In solidarity,

Oliver Rohlfs
Staff Representative
