BCGEU home support workers participated in a seniors’ forum in Victoria on Thursday night, with close to 200 people in attendance.
The forum, hosted by BC NDP MLAs Carole James, Rob Fleming, Judy Darcy and Selina Robinson, dealt with a variety of seniors’ issues, including the challenges many seniors face when accessing health care services, government services, programs and supports.
BC NDP health critic Judy Darcy shared her personal story about the struggles of when her father was in care, and how she feels that the level of senior care in BC is unacceptable. Darcy then said that home support would be a part of the BC NDP platform in the upcoming provincial general election this spring.
BCGEU member and home support worker Teen Boschma also spoke. She discussed impact of the lack of time home support workers are given to provide proper care to seniors, and the importance of increasing funding for home support in BC.
