Beacon Community Services Employees Calculation of Vacation Pay - BCGEU

An arbitrator has just ordered your Employer, Beacon Community Services, to change the way it calculates vacation pay, in order to comply with the collective agreement.

Article 18.1(b) has a chart that shows the number of vacation days and the percentage of straight-time pay you are entitled to, based on your years of service. For example, for 11 to 14 years of service, you are entitled to 25 vacation days and 10% of straight-time pay.

The Union discovered that Beacon was calculating vacation pay at slightly lower percentages than those listed in Article 18.1(b). For example, for an employee with 11 to 14 years of service, they were calculating vacation pay at 9.6% instead of 10%.

The Union filed a grievance and successfully took it to arbitration. The arbitrator agreed with the Union that Beacon was in breach of the collective agreement, and ordered Beacon to resume calculating vacation pay using the percentages in Article 18.1(b).

The Employer has 15 calendar days to appeal the arbitrator's decision.

In solidarity,
Emily Luther, Staff Representative (Advocacy)
