Last summer, BCGEU Component 1 member and Correctional Officer James Knighton was driving a fellow officer to the hospital in Nanaimo following an ERT training injury, when he witnessed a woman being badly beaten by a male.
The assailant was a very large, violent man, but Officer Knighton did not hesitate to jump out of the vehicle, restrain the man, allowing the woman to get to safety. According to the RCMP, Officer Knighton’s actions that day very likely saved the woman from suffering more serious injuries had he not intervened.
The Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General acknowledged Officer Knighton’s heroic deed by presenting him with the Assistant Deputy Minister’s award for bravery on November 1st, 2016.
We are so proud of Officer Knighton and the immense courage he demonstrated that day.
