Component 1 conference puts focus on dignity, safety, wages and respect - BCGEU


Delegates to the Component 1 "Dignity in Protection – Safety, Wages and Respect" conference being held April 6 – 7 in Victoria have a full agenda.

The keynote speaker is Howard Sapers, the Correctional Investigator of Canada, who will speak on the overcrowding of correctional facilities and its impact on violence against correctional officers. Sapers will also talk about the problems facilities have with inmates who have mental illness. Sapers speaks at 10:45 am on April 6.

National Union of Public and General Employees Treasurer, Larry Brown, will give a national perspective on issues facing unions today. Brown speaks at 9:30 am on April 6.

MLAs Kathy Corrigan and Leonard Krog will also speak. The MLAs speak on April 7 at 1:00 pm.

WorkSafeBC representative David Clarabut, will speak on occupational health and safety issues at 4:00 pm on April 6.

BCGEU president Darryl Walker wraps up the conference on Thursday afternoon at 4:45 pm.

Staff from the union will be making a number of presentations.
