On October 8, 2014 the BCGEU Classifications representative met with members of the Corrections Classification Focus Group (Dean Purdy Component 1 Vice President, Brian Campbell Component 1 2nd Vice Chair, and Chris Jack Component 1 member at large). The Focus Group is continuing to put together our arguments and the work necessary for the hearing regarding both the Corrections Officer and Corrections Supervisor benchmarks.
We are getting closer to the end of this extremely complicated process. This includes complex, inter-related and technical issues that require precise language when comparing our job descriptions, previous and existing benchmarks, and job duties within the context of the Public Service Job Evaluation Plan (PSJEP).
We are making good progress, but we also want to compile detailed evidence and information in order to put our best and strongest case forward at a formal hearing. This is particularly important because the union has the onus to show that the PSJEP factors should go up, whereas the employer just has to state that the current status is correct.
In the meantime, the Corrections Classification Focus Group will be touring at least three more jails with BCGEU representatives to get a final look, and to answer any outstanding questions necessary to support our position at the upcoming hearing.
The Sheriffs Benchmark Focus Group will also be meeting soon and we will advise you with another update when that happens. Your union will continue to provide further updates in the weeks ahead.
In solidarity
Dean Purdy
BCGEU Vice President
Correctional and Sheriff Services vice president
