The BCGEU was recently informed that President Emeritus John Shields and his wife Robin were involved in a serious car accident on Vancouver Island. Please join us in keeping John, Robin and their family in our thoughts during this difficult time, as they start down the road to wellness.

"I know John well, and was inspired by the legacy of his time as president," says President Stephanie Smith. "On behalf of the leadership and members of the BCGEU, we send both John and Robin healing thoughts and positive energy for a speedy recovery."

John Shields served over four terms as president of the BCGEU, from 1985 to 1999, and is well respected throughout the labour movement. He has remained a great friend to many at the BCGEU, providing insightful guidance and leadership. Since his time with our union, he has worked as an instructor at Vancouver Island University, and is currently a Director of Matrix Asset Management and the Director of Operations for the Land Conservancy of BC.
