Nominations are now open for following positions which are vacant on the Local 1002 Executive:
- 1st Vice Chair
- Treasurer
- Member-at-Large
The role of the Vice-Chairperson as follows:
- assists the Local chairperson in performing the responsibilities outlined above;
- may be delegated to perform specific duties, like recruiting OSH committee members, or convening steward networking meeting or chairing Local committees;
- substitutes for the Local chairperson in his or her absence;
- if assigned responsibility for Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) committees, should keep up‑to-date lists of OHS committee members, and with the staff rep assess training needs, and whether committees are meeting regularly;
- if assigned steward networking will work with staff rep to ensure meetings of stewards are regularly occurring, and plan training.
The role of the Treasurer as follows:
- is responsible for all finances of the local and distribute funds according to the union’s financial policies;
- submits and reports on the local’s finances at each meeting;
- submits an audited statement annually to the union’s treasurer through the component treasurer;
- deposits funds, writes cheques and has signing authority, including for member expense claims;
- prepares an annual budget (in consultation with the local executive) and submits to the component treasurer;
- monitors spending;
- submits monthly requests for reimbursement to the component treasurer;
- ensures financial policies are adhered to;
- chairs the finance committee of the local;
- attends all local meetings;
- leads and/or assists with M2M campaigns and other campaigns as necessary.
The role of the Member-at-Large is as follows:
- the number of positions is determined by the local bylaws;
- supports the local table officers as necessary;
- is assigned to tasks, committees as required by chair;
- this is a good “apprenticeship” position to learn more about the local and its activities and the union as a whole, for the possible future in running for other local positions;
- are often members representing different sectors within a local and ensure each sector has a voice at the local executive level;
- attends all meetings;
- leads and/or assists with M2M campaigns;
- leads and/or assists with Workplace Leadership objectives/initiatives
The nomination form is attached and must be filled out, signed by both the nominator and nominee and submitted by fax to the BCGEU North Island Area Office, 106-1650 Terminal Ave N, Nanaimo, BC V9S 0A3. Toll Free Fax: 1‑800‑946‑0247 by the deadline. The deadline for nomination is 5:00 p.m. Friday, September 9, 2016.
If an election is required, all candidates may submit one page (8½" by 11") biography (e.g. union experience and why you would be a good candidate) for copying and distribution to members with ballots. This must be provided to the Area Office within one business day of the close of nominations 5:00 pm Monday, September 12, 2016.
