Long-time Local Chairperson, Sue Powell is retiring. As such nominations are now open for the position of Local Chairperson.
The role of the Local Chairperson as follows:
Local Chairperson:
- works with other Local officers to:
recruit stewards and ensure OHS committee members are appointed;
set up steward networks;
ensure stewards are regularly confirming membership lists in worksites and providing orientation for new members;
plan training opportunities with the staff representative for stewards, officers and other activists;
plan member outreach projects;
support strikes, and labour movement activities in their area;
- works with the secretary to plan meetings; approves agendas and chairs meetings;
- has signing authority for documents and any Local account;
- represents the Local on the component executive and reports out on component & BCGEU activities;
- ensures the Local follows BCGEU policies, procedures, constitution and bylaws;
- ensures the Local is represented at the cross component committee and local labour council;
- as required, sits on the Area Grievance Appeal committee.

The form must be faxed to 1-800-946-0247 or emailed to the Nanaimo Area Office at [email protected] by the deadline. The deadline for nominations is 5:00 p.m. Thursday, January 5, 2017.
If an election is required, all candidates may submit one page (8½" by 11") biography (e.g. union experience and why you would be a good candidate) for copying and distribution to members with ballots. This must be provided to the Area Office within one business day of the close of nominations 5:00 p.m., Friday, January 6, 2017.
