BCGEU members employed by the Native Courtworker and Counselling Association of British Columbia are continuing their rotating job action, with demonstrations planned in a number of communities across British Columbia in coming weeks.

BCGEU president Stephanie Smith has requested a meeting with Parliamentary Secretary Laurie Throness (MLA Chilliwack-Hope) to get an update on the report he is preparing for Minister of Justice Suzanne Anton on safety in B.C.’s provincial prisons. 

On October 20-21 the BCGEU and the BC Public Service Agency facilitated a health and safety workshop for OHS committee co-chairs and wardens from all nine provincial custody centres. Also attending were Component 1 executive members and Corrections Branch headquarters staff.

BCGEU members in the Victoria area are invited to spend some time with the new BCGEU president Stephanie Smith and members of the Provincial Executive.

Your Corrections and Sheriff Services Component scheduled a meeting with Court Services to discuss issues of ongoing concern to Deputy Sheriffs. Component 1 Vice President, Dean Purdy and David Vipond, Director of Negotiations met with the ADM of Court Services, Kevin Jardine and Chief Sheriff Paul Corrado on October 2nd at the Victoria Court House.

On October 8, 2014 the BCGEU Classifications representative met with members of the Corrections Classification Focus Group (Dean Purdy Component 1 Vice President, Brian Campbell Component 1 2nd Vice Chair, and Chris Jack Component 1 member at large). The Focus Group is continuing to put together our arguments and the work necessary for the hearing regarding both the Corrections Officer and Corrections Supervisor benchmarks.
