This week a communique from the Public Service Pension Plan (PSPP) was issued with regard to a plan rule change as of June 24, 2014. This rule change affects BCGEU members who have worked in both a public safety role (Corrections) and in a general services role and who have pensionable service in both. At issue was the loss of the Normal Retirement Age 60 (NRA60) rule for Corrections' members who move to a general service position prior to retirement.

This week CBC radio and television and the Globe and Mail newspaper reported the troubling story of Barry Rhodes. Rhodes was a Correctional Officer at Vancouver Island Regional Correctional Centre and a former BCGEU member.

The 20 remaining staff at Victoria Youth Custody Services received layoff notices today as required by the employment security provisions of the collective agreement.

In 2011 the BCGEU settled a policy grievance concerning the denial of STIIP claims.  The settlement resolved two issues that were problematic for members.
