The BCGEU is organizing a community meeting to discuss the provincial government’s surprise decision to close the Victoria Youth Custody Services centre.

The BCGEU is calling on Children and Family Development Minister Stephanie Cadieux to halt the planned closure of the Victoria Youth Custody Centre (VYCC) as more and more civic leaders and organizations are opposing the decision.

“How much more is Minister Cadieux going to cut on her way to improving services for vulnerable children and youth,” asks BCGEU president Darryl Walker. Walker’s comment comes following today’s announcement that the provincial government will close the Victoria Youth Custody Centre.

The BCGEU is calling for the creation of a tripartite working group to address worker safety following the completion of comprehensive WCB inspections of all provincial prisons. The group would include representatives from the BCGEU, BC Corrections and the WCB.

Corrections
On April 14, BCGEU Classifications representatives met with the Component 1 Corrections Classification Focus Group to review the BCPSA's draft classification grid level ratings and rationales for the Corrections Officer and Corrections Supervisor positions. The Focus Group is made up of myself, Brian Campbell (Component 2nd Vice Chair NFPC), Chris Jack (Local 104 Chair FRCC) and Stan Stanowski (Local 104 member FRCC).
