WCB inspection to start at KRCC - BCGEU

The WCB has informed the union they will be conducting an inspection at the Kamloops Regional Correctional Centre (KRCC) starting next week. The inspection will run from September 23 to September 26.

Important information about the PharmaCare tie in - BCGEU

During the last round of bargaining many bargaining units accepted a PharmaCare tie in to help in reducing the cost of their extended health plans.  Although many members already had a PharmaCare tie in, many others are just starting to go through the change and may be finding they must navigate unfamiliar processes in order to get their prescription drug covered by the extended health plan.

WCB inspections lead to policy change on OC (pepper) spray - BCGEU

BC Corrections has informed us that OC spray (pepper spray) will be issued to living unit officers at all six maximum security jails in B.C. The announcement follows a WCB inspection of the North Fraser Pretrial Centre (NFPC) in April. Health and safety violations were found at NFPC and nine orders were written by WCB officers, including one that says OC spray must be provided to all living unit officers at the NFPC. The WCB officers concluded that the current policy of not providing OC spray to officers working on the living units fails to minimize the risk to officers from inmate violence.

BCGEU presents benchmark proposal for CO’s and CS’s - BCGEU

On Wednesday May 22 a BCGEU classifications representative and two members from the Component 1 executive (Dean Purdy, Component Chair VIRCC and Brian Campbell, Component 2nd Vice Chair NFPC) met with Corrections Branch officials and a PSA classifications representative in order to review the benchmark positions. The meeting is part of a process to create a new benchmark for both Correctional Officers (CO’s) and Correctional Supervisors (CS’s). These are the classification-specific detailed descriptions of each job and how they correspond directly to the Public Service Job Evaluation Plan (PSJEP).
