As social distance and gathering restrictions took effect in B.C., the closure of casinos meant that all BCGEU members (Component 17 - General Services) at those facilities faced an unexpected layoff.
While Employment Insurance and the in-development Canada Emergency Response Benefit promised some economic relief for members, there are a number of other benefits -- including extended health -- that were set to lapse with the layoff.
Backed by over 1,000 members at Great Canadian Gaming Corporation casinos, the bargaining team negotiated an extension -- and in some cases an expansion -- of these important benefits to all union members at the casinos through June 30, 2020. Included in that extension was:
- Extended health benefits
- Dental benefits
- Maintaining members' pension, banked sick and vacation days during the shutdown;
- Continue the Employee and Family Assistance Program
- Benefits would now include families -- even when not included prior
