Douglas Care Community - Notice of Strike Vote - BCGEU

To:    All BCGEU Members at Douglas Care Community
Re:    Update on Bargaining – Notice of Strike Vote

Further to our bulletin dated May 11, 2017, the Union and the Employer reached an impasse when we met again on May 16th.

At the end of our negotiations on May 11th, after the parties had agreed to virtually all non-monetary items, we told the Employer that their responses to the Union's monetary proposals were completely unacceptable. We could not recommend their wage proposals to the membership.

On May 16th, the Employer came to the table with a revised wage proposal that was actually lower than their initial proposal for the first year, and continued to reject outright the Union's proposals for modest improvements to the benefit plan and other monetary provisions.

The Union countered with a legitimate package, including reasonable wage increases and other improvements, however the Employer rejected the Union's proposals. At the end of the day, the Employer returned with with a slight improvement for the first year's wages, but the parties remained far apart.

It's time to send a strong message to your Employer that the hard-working members at Douglas Care Community deserve a fair deal, so we will be holding a strike vote.
