Nearly 44,000 health care workers represented by the multi-union Facilities Bargaining Association (FBA) have voted 89 per cent in favour of ratifying a new collective agreement that includes important job security, health and safety, and compensation improvements.
The three-year deal reached with B.C.'s public health employers last December also restores contracting-out protections stripped by the previous Liberal government in 2002.
"This new agreement is a major step forward for our members in the facilities sector," said BCGEU president Stephanie Smith. "Significantly, it restores the contracting-out protections that were eliminated 16 years ago and includes other provisions that will protect workers while also improving the vital services they deliver to British Columbians."
Highlights of the agreement include:
- General wage increases of six per cent, in line with government's current negotiating mandate for the public sector.
- Entry level wages will be raised by phasing out lower steps in the wage grid. A number of shift premiums have also been improved.
- Re-establishing a provincial organization focusing on occupational health and safety in health care – a sector with among the highest rates of injuries in B.C. The provincial government will provide $8.5 million over three years to support this objective.
The BCGEU is the second largest union in the FBA representing roughly 2,000 members. The Hospital Employees' Union represents more than 90 per cent of the 44,000 health care workers covered by the agreement.
The new collective agreement will be in effect from April 1, 2019 until March 31, 2022.
