BCGEU Stewards needed – You are the Union!
The BCGEU is opening nominations for up to two union stewards at Kenneth Gordon Maplewood School (KGMS).
The union is only as strong as KGMS members decide. You need to know your rights, and stand up for them.
Stewards are the eyes and ears of the union at the worksite. They are workplace leaders.
Stewards know and help enforce the collective agreement and assist, support and help ensure that members' rights are protected.
We do not expect you to have prior experience or knowledge. We just need members who are motivated to make a difference in the workplace. The BCGEU provides free training. After training, stewards are mentored by the undersigned BCGEU staff representative.
Stewards may deal with grievances and complaints at the worksite, but they also are involved in assisting members in:
- understanding their rights under the collective agreement;
- listening to members' issues;
- referring issues to the Labour Management Committee or Occupational Health and Safety Committees;
- ensuring the union bulletin board is kept up-to-date; and much more!
If you are interested in becoming a steward at your worksite, please fill out the included nomination form and return it to my attention by email to firstname.lastname@example.org or by fax 604-215-1410 by 5pm on Tuesday October 16, 2018.
