We met for three days, made progress, and committed to meeting again on June 25 to continue with bargaining. Thanks to our impressive strike vote, we are standing firm in our talks with the employer and will not put up with any stall tactics.
So far mediation has been productive – the employer appears to be listening. But mediation will only continue as long as Gateway makes substantial moves. We can walk out the minute we reach a stalemate – and we will, if necessary.
We know that many of you are frustrated that we are not going back to the table until next week. Scheduling time with the mediator can be challenging, and unfortunately, we cannot dictate when mediation will take place.
While we're hopeful that mediation will continue to be productive, we also need to prepare for the possibility that we might have to action our strike vote. Over the next week, picket captains will be reaching out to you to talk about picket shifts. We will also be looking for people to help a strike run smoothly by helping with logistics, communications, scheduling, and planning fun activities on the line. Let one of your organizers, stewards, or leaders know how you would like to help!
We are stronger and more united than ever and let's keep it up! United we bargain, divided we beg!
In Solidarity,
BCGEU Gateway Okanagan Bargaining Committee
Mike Schmidt, Gayle Furgala, Erwin Ruf, Bryan Woodard
Chad McQuarrie, Staff Representative – Negotiations
