Mandatory Education Requirements within MHSU - BCGEU

The Union’s Staff Representative in Victoria met with the Employer to discuss the compliance of our BCGEU members in completing all Mandatory Education Requirements within MHSU. As this is a topic that will more than likely trickle down through all Island Health locations due to the fact that the mandatory training needed is required by all employees and I understand is related to WCB requirements.

Historically, the Employer has not followed up with each employee to ensure they have completed the refresher/updated course requirements related to their jobs. This has become problematic for the Employer as the Health Authority is required to abide by new WCB - Violence Prevention and existing legislation First Aid/CPR, Med Monitoring, that has made it mandatory for all employees to complete the core competencies and PVPC requirements as a condition of employment. This training is to be completed by June 2017.

The Employer has put the Union on notice that they will be meeting with each employee who has not completed these mandatory education requirements starting in April 2017. These particular meetings will not be disciplinary in nature, but members will be offered the option of having their steward present, as failure to comply could affect ongoing employment. The Union supports the Employer holding these meetings prior to any further action being taken in relation to training that is mandatory as a condition of employment.

Please encourage our members to complete these mandatory educational requirements.
