In ongoing efforts to address issues at your worksite, our union met in August with Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Training, Melanie Mark.
In this meeting we stressed members' frustration with lack of resources, difficult working conditions and inadequate compensation. We also discussed the negative impacts of a heavy workload and high turnover due to a shortage of supports and resources, and the lack of a human resources department.
The minister confirmed she is very aware of these issues and made clear to us that discussions within government are taking place around potential solutions. While the minister was unable to share specific details at that time, she asked that our union and the members involved continue our efforts to proactively find solutions.
Our union will continue this conversation with government and will keep you updated on the progress. We will also be pursuing members' issues directly with NEC at the bargaining table when negotiations commence next week.
In solidarity,
Stephanie Smith, BCGEU president
Cindy Battersby, Component 7 vice-president
