PRT Growing Services now a 100 per cent BCGEU Shop - BCGEU

All workers at PRT Growing Services now have the right to join a union, as per a new collective agreement negotiated with the PRT Bargaining Committee.

Previously, there were four areas of the collective agreement that disallowed union membership but that language has now been removed. Over 100 workers at facilities in Campbell River, Harrop, Red Rock, Vernon, and Armstrong will join the BCGEU bargaining unit and now be covered by the new agreement.

"This contract hasn't had any major structural changes in about 30 years," said Bargaining Committee Chair Jan Brewer. "We are very excited about these changes, which will make this a better workplace for everyone."

Other highlights of the new collective agreement include:

  • 3/2.5/3 per cent annual wage increases over the next three years (retroactive to January 1st, 2018)
  • New wage grid classifications
  • Easier access and retention of health & welfare benefits and sick leave, with employer-paid premiums during layoff periods of up to 90 days
  • Paid special leaves and retirement allowance extended to part-timers and non-continuous workers
  • Footwear allowance of $150 every two years
  • Increase to Pesticide premium to $2/hour, now also extended to more workers
  • Resolution to a number of local issues and outstanding grievances including: scheduling shifts; designation of lead hands/foremen and repair and maintenance; and the progression through the FNW series
  • New pattern language for harassment and bullying and maternity/parental/adoption leaves

The BCGEU is one of the largest and most diverse unions in British Columbia with over 77,000 members.
