Public Service Benefits - Appendix 4 / Rehab

Working in the BC public service entitles you to access a variety of comprehensive benefit plans and services.

Depending on your employee status, you are eligible for:

• Medical Services Plan (MSP)
• Extended Health & Dental
• Optional Group Life
• BC Employee and Family Assistance Program

Some of these plans and services can be extended to your spouse and your dependents. However, if your spouse is also an employee covered under the Public Service Benefit Plan, only one employee may enroll in the extended health, dental and medical services plans.

BCEFAP is a service that provides confidential, professional assistance to employees and their families to resolve problems that affect their personal lives and sometimes, their job performance. If you need assistance, call toll-free 1-800-655-5004. This number is answered 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

The Short Term Illness and Injury Plan (STIIP) and the Long Term Disability Plan (LTD) provide you with wage loss income and benefits in the event that you become disabled or unable to continue working due to illness or injury (LTD Terms of Reference). There are limitations to eligibility; however, if you become totally disabled from working in any gainful occupation, you may receive coverage until you recover, retire or resign from government service.

To help disabled workers return to work, there is a jointly appointed Rehabilitation Committee that is designed to encourage and facilitate your early return to gainful employment. The committee reviews return to work plans and makes recommendations concerning rehabilitation and retraining. The committee also assists you by making resources available to help you return to work.

Additionally, the Workers Compensation Board Act (Worksafe BC) sets out the legislative framework for providing compensation to workers who suffer a work-related injury or illness. As all Worksafe claims run concurrently with STIIP and LTD, BCGEU staff representatives often consult with Worksafe representatives concerning vocational plans and appeals.
