Safety Tip of the Month - May 2017 - BCGEU

CREATING A SAFE AND PSYCHOLOGICALLY HEALTHY WORKPLACE

Hello Component 5 Members,

Because May 1-8 is the Canadian Mental Health Association's (CMHA) 66th annual Mental Health Week, the committee has decided to share with you some tips on creating a safe and psychologically healthy workplace.

As we all know, protecting psychological health and safety leads to happier, more productive workers. Employers can attract more talented employees, keep them, and provide the kind a work environment where they feel valued. A healthy workplace encourages productivity and positively affects the employer’s “bottom line”.

Here are 10 tips on how we can start to build psychologically healthy and safe workplaces.

  1. Say Thank You- to those who work for you, to those who you work with and to those you work for.
  2. Bring Laughter into the workplace. If you bring positive 99% of the time you will receive it back. Perhaps bring an appropriate joke in or a cartoon or even a personal story of something you might have done or seen.
  3. Have team meetings and the bigger vision. Management teams should do more listening than talking.
  4. Throughout the week ask each team member three business – related questions a day.
  5. Try to focus on what each other likes about work and how they feel, rather than the “widgets”. LISTEN to their responses.
  6. Take action on an employee idea. Decide that the team will learn from its success or its failure.
  7. Be kind to one another and yourself. Make sure you are taking your breaks. This will help with energy levels and productivity.
  8. Try to get out of the worksite each day even if it is only for 10-15 minutes.
  9. Practice positive talk to yourself and one anther
  10. Ask for help when you need it.
  11. Don’t let problems fester. Talk about in an open, honest and respectful manner.

These are just a few tips that can create a positive work environment for everyone. There is a lot more information on the CMHA website at www.cmha.bc.ca, or you call them at 1-800-555-8222.

If you or anyone you know is suffering from Mental Health problems be sure to go to your doctor and he can lead you to the path of healing.

Let’s kill the STIGMA that goes with the subject of Mental Health and keep talking about it.

The BCGEU has 20 people trained in Mental Health First aid so this is another means of reaching out as well. Just call Union Headquarters and reach out to the OHS Officer Brandon Thistle and his department can also help.

Take care of yourselves and each other. Let’s work together and not against one another.

Your Committee hopes you keep the conversation going and have a happy month of May.

From your Component 5 OHS committee

PEACE.
