The BCGEU is seeking nominations for two union stewards at Legal Services Society – Vancouver Regional Centre (Burrard Street).
We have secured the employer's agreement to increase the number of stewards at your worksite to four, and are opening two union steward positions for nomination.
The Union is only as strong as LSS members decide. You need to know your rights, and stand up for them.
Stewards are the eyes and ears of the Union at the worksite. They are workplace leaders.
Stewards know and help enforce the collective agreement and assist, support and help ensure that members' rights are protected.
We do not expect you to have prior experience or knowledge. We just need members who are motivated to make a difference in the workplace. The BCGEU provides free training. After training, stewards are mentored by the BCGEU staff representative.
Stewards may deal with grievances and complaints at the worksite, but they also are involved in assisting members in:
- understanding their rights under the Collective Agreement
- listening to members' issues
- referring issues to the Labour Management Committee or Occupational Health and Safety Committees
- ensuring the Union bulletin board is kept up-to-date; and much more!
If more than two steward nominations are received, an election will be held in the workplace.
Please note that only one of the two nominated stewards can be from the Intake department, owing to operational considerations.
If you are interested in becoming a steward at your worksite, please fill out the included nomination form and return it to my attention via fax 604-215-1410 or email back to firstname.lastname@example.org by Monday, December 17, 2018 at 5:00 pm.
