BC Housing Management Commission – Administrative/Clerical (Adm) and Maintenance/Service (Mtc) Divisions - Sick Pay - BC General Employees' Union (BCGEU)

On April 1, 2022, the Employment Standards Act was amended, mandating that all employers in British Columbia provide up to five 100% paid sick days, each calendar year, to employees who have been employed for more than 90 consecutive days and working fulltime hours. Despite this, BC Housing continued to pay only 75% of wages for the first five days of absence, neglecting their statutory obligations.

Throughout 2023, many of you filed grievances to receive full pay in line with these statutory obligations. By Fall 2023, these grievances were successfully resolved, and those involved were compensated fully for any of the first five absences previously underpaid.

However, it has come to our attention that some employees are still receiving less than the required 100% pay for their initial five days of sick leave post-resolution. We had assumed that BC Housing would adhere to their obligations after the grievances, but recent reports from the last 60 days indicate otherwise.

We urge anyone who has taken their sick days between April 1, 2022 and present day to verify that BC Housing has paid you fully according to the statutory requirements. If they have not, you have the right to file a grievance to ensure BC Housing meets their legal obligations.
