BCGEU is accepting nominations for one additional steward to represent members working at GIS Workplace Solutions Inc. in Local 1703.
The union is seeking one additional steward for this employer because Brookfield GIS Workplace Solutions Inc. operates without a centralized worksite and existing stewards are spread across the Lower Mainland.
Any union member at Brookfield GIS Workplace Solutions Inc. can nominate another member for election as a steward.
Both the person nominated and the nominator need to complete the attached steward nomination form, and return it to the BCGEU Lower Mainland Area Office by email: email@example.com or by fax: 604-215-1410 no later than Monday, May 9, 2016 at 5pm.
If more than one nomination is submitted, an election will be held within a week of the close of nominations.
What do stewards do?
Stewards are volunteer union representatives in the workplace. They are the eyes and ears of the union on the worksite.
Members will look to you for support, advice and representation. They will come to you for information about the collective agreement. Stewards provide support and advice to union members who think they are being treated unfairly or are facing workplace problems. Stewards may help file grievances.
Stewards also sign up new employees and provide information on BCGEU services. They conduct ratification votes and elections, and stewards keep members informed by distributing BCGEU information.
Are stewards trained?
Yes. BCGEU provides three-day steward training, with no loss of pay. There are NO tests!
How are stewards supported?
New stewards have the support of existing, experienced stewards. All stewards have access to the assigned BCGEU Staff Representative who can answer questions, listen to concerns or otherwise support workplace stewards. If necessary, BCGEU Staff Representatives represent union stewards in the workplace.
Please consider volunteering as a Brookfield GIS Workplace Solutions Inc. BCGEU shop steward.
