AG Article 29 Committee report - Component 01 - Sheriffs' Services - BCGEU

The Attorney General's Article 29 Committee met recently with the employers' representatives to discuss outstanding issues affecting the Attorney General's section of our component. A number of issues were presented directly to Deputy Attorney General Alan Seckel.

Union representatives' list of issues included the need to increase recruitment and retention efforts within the Sheriffs Service. The employer's position is that there is no more money allocated in the upcoming year's budget, beyond the 1 grid pay increase and the 3 per cent increase that is due in April.

There was general agreement to work together on a proposal to take to the Treasury Board in the next fiscal year.

The union also addressed the Code 3 issue on the use of emergency equipment, arguing that the current policy restricting the use of lights and sirens causes an undue safety risk to members in certain situations.

Other issues brought forward by the union include the modified work week, jackets, footwear, and uniforms in general. The union prefers a Gore-Tex jacket to protect members from inclement weather, in place of the old bomber jacket provided by the employer.

The union also presented concerns that uniform pants be washable, to cut down on dry cleaning costs for members.
