Sheriffs now eligible for Peace Officer Exemplary Medal - BCGEU

The Governor General, Michaelle Jean, has announced that BC Sheriffs are now being included in the Peace Officer Exemplary Medal program.

The medal recognizes people who work in high-risk jobs and who dedicate themselves to public safety.

The medal was created in 2004 and is awarded to recipients who have completed 20 years of exemplary service, including at least 10 years involving risk. Peace officers eligible must have been employed on or ater September 1998.

"I am very pleased with this announcement," said Dean Purdy, Chair of Component 1. "We have been pushing for this recognition for some time, including having this as an agenda item in meetings with the Attorney General, and a resolution passed at the BCGEU's 2006 Policy convention calling for the inclusion of sheriffs in the medal program."

"Sheriffs and Correctional Officers put their lives on the line each day they go to work and it's only right that they be recognized for that," said Purdy.

More information on the process for nominations will be released by the government in the near future.
