BCGEU members support the provincial government's recent announcement that a new mental health facility on the Riverview lands in Coquitlam is slated to open in 2019, replacing the Burnaby Centre for Mental Health and Addiction.
"BCGEU members are pleased to see the provincial government's continued commitment to mental health and addictions treatment, especially as the province tackles an opioid crisis," said BCGEU President Stephanie Smith. "More beds are clearly needed, but more modern facilities are a step in the right direction."
Premier John Horgan said the provincial government decided to proceed with the plans that were announced in 2015 by the previous BC Liberal government, as they didn't want to delay a project that was ready to start and that further expansion that won't delay the project is being considered.
