Tentative Agreement Reached For BCGEU Members Covered By Health Facilities Agreement - BCGEU

Safe work, stable and secure workplaces. These are some of the features of the tentative agreement the Facilities Bargaining Association (FBA) has reached with health employers. The agreement, if ratified, will also restore contracting out protections and focus resources on making health care workplaces safer.

The agreement was reached over the weekend with the Health Employers Association of B.C. (HEABC). The BCGEU is the second largest union at the table with roughly 2,000 members. The Hospital Employees' Union represents more than 90 per cent of the 44,000 health care workers covered by the talks.

"This tentative agreement is a major step forward for members in the facilities sector," said BCGEU president Stephanie Smith. "It addresses the health and safety crisis facing our members, restores the no contracting-out provisions that were eliminated 16 years ago and also tackles workload."

"What's significant for us is that we've been able to convince health employers and the B.C. Government to work with us on system-wide approaches to improving our workplaces and working conditions," said Christine Fuller, the chair of BCGEU bargaining committee.

Full details of the agreement which include compensation increases in line with the government's negotiating mandate for public sector employers will be provided to BCGEU members in advance of ratification votes. We will let you know when voting days and times have been scheduled.
