Vacations and vacancies information for C12 members - BC General Employees' Union (BCGEU)


With summer vacation season upon us, now is a good time for a reminder on the BCGEU Administrative Professionals Collective Agreement language regarding backfill. Here is what your collective agreement states regarding vacancies: 


12.1 Positions Temporarily Vacant

    1. The employer agrees that, except in the case of emergency, an employee's workload will not be increased as a result of positions being temporarily vacant due to illness, vacation, leave of absence, or any other reason.
    2. In such instances, the Employer shall give regular employees the opportunity to substitute in higher paying positions and arrange for staff replacements at the lowest paying category.
    3. Approval for a release to a temporary assignment, where that assignment is a promotion will not be unreasonably withheld.
